I think your mailbox project is awesome! Don't give up on it. Everyone's a critic but you're the artist! Change it if -you- want or keep it if -you- want. Nothing wrong with taking a break and coming back to it later after you figure out what to do with it. You should be able to get some matte or varnish spray finish at wally world or many other places. Matte leaves a dull finish and varnish leaves a shiny finish. That'll protect the paint from wearing off from rain or contact, but I don't know if or how long it would protect from sun bleaching.

I agree with Thewog here. I think the bird looks fine and could be developed into a whole lot more! You do what you want, for *you*, because art makes us alive.
